What is Occupation?

The word occupation often makes people think of "jobs", but the actual word 'occupation' simply means the things we do everyday to keep ourselves occupied, and this includes the activities and tasks we need to do, want to do, or have to do.

As the word 'occupation' relates to the profession of occupational therapy, 'occupation' is any activity that has a positive effect on health and well-being, creates structure and organizes time, brings meaning to life - both culturally and personally, and enables people to participate in the activities of everyday life. The word 'therapy' signifies that the therapist will perform interventions that brings about enablement. Sometimes occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants work on helping a person rehabilitate a body structure needed to perform activities, while other interventions might actually include performing tasks or activities, or the actual occupation itself as a means of recovery.

Occupational Therapy assists people of all ages and abilities to participate in valued life activities.
