Always advocating for you: OT and DD Waiver pay parity

OT and DD Waiver pay parity

Jul. 31, 2026

OT and DD Waiver pay parity

At the beginning of 2026, occupational therapy services with DD Waiver in New Mexico were reimbursed 20-21% less than our physical therapy and speech therapy colleagues. Even optimists believed that parity would not be possible until summer of 2027 at the earliest.

Working tirelessly NMOTA and its lobbyist collaborated with several state legislators throughout early 2026 to secure $3.7 million to achieve occupational therapy pay parity to begin in July, 2026. As of July 20, occupational therapy practitioners received paychecks reflecting the new rates, retroactive to July 1. We are grateful for each of you who joined forces with us by advocating to your local legislators.

Did you know…

  • The money collected from NMOTA membership dues fuels advocacy efforts like this throughout the year, each year?
  • For the average occupational therapy DD Waiver practitioner in New Mexico, the additional earnings from one paycheck reflecting the new pay parity would more than cover an annual membership to NMOTA?

NMOTA proudly stands in the gap for you, the occupational therapy community in New Mexico. As we come together, we achieve great things. If you are not an active member, would you consider joining us today? We can do even greater things when you are with us.

With gratitude,

Gaylene Tool, OTR/L, AIB-VRC, CBIST

President, NMOTA
